CHANGES FROM V1.0
A nasty bug that locked the program up occasionally has been removed.
A new 'Options' menu has been added. From this the game speed can be
controlled and the hand can be aborted after a side wins their share of
the tricks.
Additional status windows appear at the end of each trick.
The computer players are just as stupid as they were in 1.0 Look for this
to be fixed in the beginning of September, when I get back from vacation.
INTRODUCTION
This program allows you and your computer partner to play euchre against
a pair of computer opponents. Certain factors of the computer partners'
playing styles can be adjusted, and overall they play a pretty good game.
I'm constantly changing their strategies, so look for new releases to come
with better computer players.
PLAYING EUCHRE
Euchre is started from the CLI by simply running "euchre" with no command line
options. After setting up the screen, the dealer is chosen randomly. Five
cards are dealt to each player, and the next card is placed face up in front
of the current dealer.
The player to the left of the dealer begins the bidding. When the bidding
gets to you, a window appears to the right of your cards with a list of
your options. Click the mouse in the appropriate box to make your selection.
Note that the "alone" box toggles on and off and can be set before you make
your selection.
After the bidding, play begins. If you are the dealer and have to pick up the
turned up card, click on the card you wish to discard and the new card will be
placed there. During play, simply click the mouse on top of the card you
would like to play. If the card is not legal, the screen will flash and you
will have to make another selection.
At the end of each trick, the winner is displayed on the status line. To
go on to the next trick, click the mouse button and the next hand will
begin.
The current number of tricks held, score, and trump suit are displayed on the
status line at the top of the screen.
You can quit at any time by either clicking on the close box or selecting
"Quit" from the Project menu.
SETTINGS
The playing style for each player can be set individually. This is
accomplished through the "Pickup" and "Call Trump" menus. The "Pickup"
settings determine how daring the player will be in oredering up the top
card. The "Call Trump" settings determine how daring the player will be
in the calling of trump at the beginning of the hand. Currently these are
the only available computer settings.
Options Menu:
When 'Fast Game' is checked, the game progresses at full speed.
Otherwise, the game will progress more slowly.
When 'End Early' is checked, as soon as a team has been euchred or
the team that called trump has won the hand, the round ends.
RELEASE NOTES
